Recently, Goldman Sachs instituted this new dress code policy.

Gone are the days of the shirt and tie.  Now is the time to re-think the smart casual work wardrobe.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions. They will give you a little understanding on how to navigate the

casual dressing arena. and how to look successful in your daily attire.

1. See what the people in the "C" suite are wearing.  They will give you a reference point as to what should be worn.  If you are the person in charge, or part of that team, " dress in a manner that is consistent with your clients' expectations”, and dress well.

2. Think about your position within the company.

Your appearance should not only reflect the position you currently have, but the position you aspire to have. On the flip side, do not run the risk of being thought " less of" if you are not dressing up to par?

3.  Take a little inventory and make a mental note.  

What colors and patterns seem to have worked better for you in the past?  What have you worn more of: darks, lights, stripes, etc.?  Do you have a favorite suit, and what color is it? Is there something that just sits in your closet?

4.  Buy the best level of clothing that you can afford.

 You have a long-term strategy; you have chosen to compete. The very powerful suit is no longer the armor of choice.  Invest in clothing that is well made, fits you well, and makes you look and feel your best.  Remember, quality clothing should last for years.  Keep this in mind when you are building and buying your wardrobe.

5.  What you need to know

A good custom clothier should know all of your needs and wants.  They must know your long-term clothing goals so that they can help offer advice for your immediate needs.  If you are just getting started, tell them you need maximum flexibility so that a few pieces a can give you multiple outfits. Building a balanced wardrobe doesn't necessarily happen overnight. Take the time to discuss your needs and wants.

6.  Is there a sartorial differentiator?

Now that the “power suit” is temporarily on the shelve, how can one convey the same level of success

and position within the company if the power suit isn’t an option?  Fit and fabric take center stage.

If khakis and a sport shirt are the dress of the day, then buy the best fitting, most flattering, khakis and sport shirts.  Keep in mind, before anything is said, people have already formed an opinion about you based largely on your appearance.
