From “desert chic” to “beach formals,” modern wedding days are filled with distinctive themes. Though some dress codes may come off as unorthodox, they encourage them to get creative and wear what makes them feel good. 

One of the main reasons behind many couples selecting a unique and nontraditional outfit for their wedding is the need to feel apart from the pack.  

Though these so-called “mash-up of styles” can look good in the pictures, navigating through these out-of-the-box dress codes can get quite confusing for guests who are much more comfortable renting a tuxedo or have a go-to black dress for a wedding in their wardrobe.

Desert Chic

A wedding with canyons and cactuses as the backdrop may seem like a good idea; however, finding the right outfit for such an occasion can be tricky. When in doubt, it is always a good idea to go for the safest option. It is advised to avoid heavy fabrics such as wool or any other thick synthetics. In addition, sand and dress shoes don't mix well. Therefore, if you are going for a wedding with desert chic, lighter-weight fabrics and casual shoes are a must.

Black-Tie Boho

According to Jim Frericks, The Akron, Ohio- based owner of the wedding site Today’s Bride, “Black-Tie Boho attire is clean and sleek with minimal embellishments.” When it comes to Black-tie Boho, You, as a guest, should go for a simple yet elegant look, preferably in a monochrome palette that features small and subtle splashes of color and Bohemian flair. You can also incorporate a bit of floral or greenery to add a subtle touch to your outfit. Adding a colorful pocket square or funky patterned socks will also work in your favor.

Beach Formal

Some couples may ask their guest to come in casual attire for their beachfront wedding, while others may ask their guests to dress similarly to an indoor wedding. When attending a beachfront wedding, it is important to take into consideration the exposure to sun and sand. Bright colors are something you must take into consideration. You can also go for lighter shades and fabrics, such as linen with playful ties or cummerbunds. However as mentioned earlier, sand and dressy leather shoes don’t mix well so avoid those shoes at all costs.

Creative Formal

Creative formal is a slightly more elevated version of the dress code. According to a New your City-based Stylist, image consultant, and founder of Mr. Baldwin style says, With this dress code, a person should “mix it up to avoid predictability.” It may include suits or tuxedos with colorful vests, art-printed dinner jackets, and aesthetically pleasing accessories or patterned pocket squares. Briana Sacawa, Washington, DC-based founder of the men’s wear blog He Spoke Style, says, the aesthetics “is for richly colored velvet jackets, burgundy suits and elaborated accessorizing.” When it comes to Creative Formals, as long as the length and types of the outfits abide by the rules of a more traditional dress code, there are a plethora of options to play around with.
